DSA 2026: Hanwha, Cendana showcase upgraded K200 IFV

Hanwha Aerospace has displayed a proof-of-concept prototype of an upgraded K200 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), developed in collaboration with Malaysian vehicle manufacturer Cendana.

The upgraded vehicle – named the Malaysian IFV-Cendana Hanwha 2025 (MIFV-CH25) – was shown at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition, held in Kuala Lumpur from 20 to 23 April.

A Hanwha official told Janes that the MIFV-CH25 represents a redesign of the original K200 platform, describing the upgraded platform as a new vehicle developed on an existing design. “Pretty much everything [has been upgraded],” he said. “We changed every single bolt.”

The official said upgrades include replacing the original manual cupola with a remote‑controlled weapon station (RCWS). This change transitions the gunner's role from manual operation to an automated and digitised system, incorporating a digital rangefinder and enabling firing while on the move.

The official added that the vehicle's rear ramp has also been upgraded. Previously operated solely by a hydraulic system that required the engine to be running, the ramp has now been converted to a combined electric–hydraulic system. This enables the ramp to be opened and closed without engine power and allows faster embarkation and disembarkation.

According to the official, the prototype underwent evaluation by the Malaysian Army in August 2025, after having previously been unveiled as a concept vehicle at DSA 2024.

The official confirmed that Malaysia currently operates 111 K200 IFVs and that the MIFV‑CH25 is being positioned as a modernisation option for the in‑service fleet. However, no upgrade contract has yet been awarded.

“We are looking forward to having a contract with the Malaysian Army for the upgrading and motorisation of the rest of the vehicles,” the official said.
