Sweden procures HIMARS

The FMV is procuring HIMARS for the Swedish Armed Forces. (FMV)

Sweden's Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) announced on 16 September that it had been authorised by the country's government to procure the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) multiple rocket launcher (MRL) for the Swedish Armed Forces. The FMV valued the order for launchers and ammunition at SEK7 billion (USD700 million), with the first delivery planned for 2027.

Oscar Elardt, head of the FMV's Army Systems Management Department, said HIMARS combines high precision, long range, and a relatively low logistical burden. He added that the order includes support systems, training, and maintenance systems.

Elardt expected HIMARS to “significantly strengthen the armed forces and ultimately the army's ability for high-intensity combat”. He said, “The most important selection criterion has been the estimated time to operational capability in the army's combat units.”

Ove Hjärtberg, project manager for artillery and mortar launcher systems in the FMV, added, “The mobility and ability to fire quickly also make the system difficult for an enemy to detect and combat.”

The US State Department has approved the possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of HIMARS MRLs and related equipment worth up to USD930 million to Sweden, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced in a press release on 10 March 2026.
