The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) received another batch of Pantsir-S self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and missile (SPAAGM) systems and Pantsir-SMD stationary gun and missile systems from Rostec's High Precision holding company, Rostec announced on its website on 19 August 2026. The company said the systems passed the necessary tests and were accepted by military acceptance officials.
Rostec noted that Pantsir is capable of engaging unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ballistic and cruise missiles, and other types of aerial targets with standard surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), “hypersonic” SAMs, and short-range SAMs, with an ammunition load including all three or up to 48 SAMs. According to Rostec, Pantsir family systems are on combat alert 24 hours a day, seven days a week, “creating a protective shield over troops and civilian facilities”.
The company said the Pantsir-S is designed for the air defence of small military, administrative, and industrial facilities and areas against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and precision-guided munitions and is used to reinforce air defence groups when repelling massive air strikes. The commander of the Russian Northern Group of Troops' air defence unit, with call sign ‘Wolf', said, “Personnel are familiar with [Pantsir-S]; we've been using these systems for years, so we quickly delivered it to the deployment point, deployed it, and it's now on combat duty in the designated area.”
The latest Pantsir-SMD air defence systems are designed to protect various targets from large-scale enemy attacks, including by UAVs, and have been used in real-world conditions, according to Rostec.
