Indonesian Navy conducts first MLRS firing from PPA flight deck

The Indonesian Navy has carried out the first firing of a multiple-launch rocket system (MLRS) from the flight deck of one of its Brawijaya-class Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (PPA) warships.

The firing was carried out from the second-of-class KRI Prabu Siliwangi during a naval exercise in Indonesia's Riau Islands region between late July and early August 2026.

Images released by the Indonesian Navy indicate that the MLRS deployed on the PPA was an Indonesian Marine Corps-operated RM-70 Vampire 122 mm system, which has been photographed aboard the vessel since May 2026.

The RM-70 Vampire is a truck-mounted artillery rocket system based on the BM-21 Grad family.

It fires 122 mm rockets in rapid salvos against area targets, providing saturation fire against defensive positions and other land objectives.

Prabu Siliwangi is one of two PPA vessels purchased by Indonesia from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri under a EUR1.18 billion (USD1.36 billion) agreement.

It was commissioned in December 2025 while its sister ship, first-of-class KRI Brawijaya, entered Indonesian service in July 2025.

Both ships are equipped with a 127 mm main gun, a 76 mm gun and vertical launch system (VLS) cells that can deploy anti-air and anti-surface weapons.
