The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) has ordered four Bofors 57 mm Mk 3 naval guns and 57 mm pre-fragmented, programmable, proximity-fuzed (3P) ammunition, FMV and manufacturer BAE Systems announced on 21 October 2026.
FMV said the four guns are to replace guns currently fitted to some Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN) ships. It did not identify the classes or units involved. RSwN already operates the 57 mm Mk 3 aboard its Visby- and Gävle-class corvettes, according to FMV. BAE Systems Bofors is scheduled to deliver the guns in 2028 and 2029. The announcement does not specify the armament planned for the forthcoming Luleå-class Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention (FDI) frigates.
The FMV and BAE Systems announcements did not disclose the contract value or number of 3P rounds ordered.
The Bofors 57 mm Mk 3 is a multi-role naval gun system designed for air defence, anti-surface warfare, and naval fire-support missions. According to BAE Systems specifications, the gun weighs 7,000 kg, excluding ammunition, has a rate of fire of four rounds per second and a maximum range of 17,000 m, and holds 120 rounds in the gun module.
