Embraer and Anduril Industries announced on 21 July an agreement to integrate Anduril's pallet-launched Barracuda-500M cruise missile with Embraer's C-390 Millennium aircraft.
The collaboration between the companies represents an effort to expand the C-390's operational capabilities.
The two companies said in a joint statement that the palletized variant of the Barracuda-500M “enables airlift aircraft to launch dozens of munitions simultaneously, unlocking new concepts of operation centered around cost-effective, large-scale employment”.
“By exploring the integration of stand-off launch capabilities for palletized, kinetic, and non-kinetic effects, we are further expanding the aircraft's flexibility to meet the evolving needs of modern air forces,” Bosco Da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, said in the joint company statement.
The multi-mission aircraft already selected by the air forces of Austria, Brazil, Czechia, Hungary, South Korea, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, Uzbekistan, and the United Arab Emirates is capable of cargo and troop transport, equipment and personnel airdrops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian missions.
Anduril said it completed the first successful flight test of the pallet-launched Barracuda-500M in September 2024 and has since conducted flight tests validating its maturity, performance, and modularity, including “Networked Collaborative Autonomy flights, terminal engagements, and payload performance validation testing”.
