Chinese footage reveals previously unseen DF-26 variant

Footage first aired by a Chinese state broadcaster CCTV military programme and subsequently circulated on official channels in July 2026 appears to show a previously unseen variant of the People's Liberation Army Rocket Force's (PLARF's) DF-26 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM).
The variant features a noticeably blunted or flattened warhead apex. The footage also provides the clearest publicly released views of a DF-26 outside its launch canister.
Unlike earlier parade imagery of the missile, which typically depicted a sharply pointed re-entry vehicle or payload section, the missile shown in the programme features a truncated nose profile.
If the flattened apex is an intentional design feature rather than a protective cap or optical artefact, it may indicate the adoption of a more advanced manoeuvring re-entry vehicle designed to reduce aerodynamic heating at its tip.
This is achieved by creating a cushion of compressed air between the shockwave and the structure, significantly reducing peak thermal stresses.
As such, the modification may improve survivability during atmospheric re-entry at hypersonic speeds.
A blunter forebody could also facilitate the integration of larger radar-transparent structures or seeker systems if the missile is intended to engage moving maritime targets.
Although there is no direct evidence from the footage that the flattened nose houses a radar sensor, the additional volume created by the truncated apex could support active radars or multi-mode guidance systems associated with terminal target acquisition.
Such configurations would suggest that some DF-26 variants are intended for anti-ship missions.
Another noteworthy feature visible in the footage is the presence of light-coloured panels or apertures on the missile's upper body beneath the warhead section.
