Brazil orders additional Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems.

The Brazilian Navy procured two additional 40mm Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems from Sweden's BAE Systems Bofors, the General Directorate of Navy Materiel told Janes on 3 July.

The General Directorate of Navy Materiel declined to disclose the contract amount and delivery schedule.

The Bofors 40Mk4 for Brazil principally consists of remotely-operated turret with gyro-stabilised local control backup, mounting the ammunition loading system, a 40mm Bofors L/70 cannon, a Muzzle Velocity Radar system (MVR), and a TV camera.

Alongside standard rounds, it can fire the programmable 3P all-target ammunition.

The naval artillery systems are intended to arm two patrol ships that are part of the Patrol Vessels Procurement Programme (PRONAPA), including for the Macaé-class coastal patrol ship NPa Miramar (P74), the General Directorate of Navy Materiel told Janes .

Each vessel will receive a single Bofors 40Mk4 weapon system.

Miramar , which is being built by the local state-owned shipyard Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro (AMRJ), is scheduled to be commissioned in December 2028, according to the General Directorate of Navy Materiel.

Miramar will be the first Macaé-class ship to include provisions to operate an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) configured for the mine countermeasures (MCM) role, the General Directorate of Navy Materiel said.

The construction of a sixth Macaé-class ship, the NPa Magé (P75) is scheduled to begin in December 2026, according to the Directorate of Navy Programs Management.

The 54.20 m-long Macaé-class displacing 500 tonnes is based on the Vigilante 400 CL54 patrol ship design of France's shipbuilder CMN NAVAL.
