AFRL certifies Anduril Barracuda-M munitions as WOSA-compliant

Anduril Industries and the US Department of Defense (DoD) announced the company's Barracuda-M family of munitions was certified as compliant with the Weapon Open Systems Architecture (WOSA) on 23 September 2026.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) subjected the Barracuda to independent testing by the Munition Open Architecture Test and Evaluation Laboratory (MOATEL) at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

Air Force Material Command (AFMC) said the verification followed a four-day independent assessment of 14 weapon-system domains. Those domains included the mission autonomy, seeker, inertial measurement unit (IMU), GPS, air-data sensor, propulsion, airframe control, target state estimator, altimeter aiding nav, clock, autopilot, guidance, navigation and munitions data bus (MDB) WOSA domains.

Anduril said the test “demonstrated modularity between Anduril's internal and external MDB implementations, enabling rapid tech refresh of WOSA-compliant software”, with Pat Morris, vice president of Advanced Effects at Anduril, adding that AFRL and MOATEL's verification validates a “fundamental design decision behind Barracuda: build the weapon around a simple, modular architecture so that programs can integrate new technology without redesigning the entire system”.

Brigadier General Douglas Wickert, Department of the Air Force (DAF) Technology Executive Officer and AFRL commander, said WOSA provides “programs a verified path to turn new technology into adaptable warfighting capability”.

“By validating that open systems work at scale, we are fundamentally changing how we transition technology and enabling the rapid integration and fielding of new innovations faster than the threat evolves,” he said in an AFMC press release.
