The US Navy awarded HII's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) unit a USD56 million contract for shipbuilding engineering and design in support of the trilateral Australia, UK, and US (AUKUS) partnership, HII confirmed on 13 October.
The contract includes an option which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to USD91 million, HII said.
Under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract, NNS will continue supporting the UK and Australia AUKUS efforts, including technology insertion, engineering, supply chain and workforce development support, and digital transformation, HII said.
The award also includes the US industry support (USIS) effort of NNS engineers and designers to support the design of the AUKUS nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) to be built by the UK and Australia, HII said.
HII noted it is also working with Australian industry and academia in Australia to develop the workforce needed to support Australia's nuclear-powered submarine enterprise. This includes educating and training engineers, maritime specialists, nuclear tradespeople and other professionals to support the enterprise across its full lifecycle.
HII was awarded the Australian Submarine Agency's Nuclear Capability Advisory Services (ANCAS) contract in December 2025 to support development of Australia's Nuclear Power Submarine (NPS) programs through nuclear program management and technical support services.
