Thales signs deal to provide new generation optronic vision systems to Germany

Thales signed a framework contract for the delivery of new generation optronic vision systems to the German Armed Forces under the Rheinmetall-led Infanterist der Zukunft - Erweitertes System (IdZ-ES) (Infantryman of the Future – Expanded System) modernisation programme, according to a 21 July Thales press release.
Thales will be supplying optronic systems in mid-four-figure range quantities, which includes its XTraim thermal weapon sight systems, and its new generation night vision systems. The first deliveries are scheduled for 2027. Both systems can display augmented reality information, according to Thales.
The new generation night vision system developed by Thales combines intensified and thermal imaging. The system has an open architecture which allows for connectivity with military equipment already in service. The German Armed Forces will be the first military to field the new night vision system, according to the release.
The XTraim thermal weapon sight is a combination of a red dot sight and thermal imager. It is designed to be compatible with night vision goggles (NVGs) through the weapon sight. The day sight is located in the top end of the sight, and the thermal channel is in the lower part of the sight, according to Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Land . The XTraim can be fitted to weapons that feature a NATO accessory rail, which is compatible with the STANAG 2324/MIL-STD 1913 rail.
Thales says it will provide support services for optronic systems in Germany.
