US approves AEGIS combat system sales for Germany

The US Department of State (DoS) approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of Aegis integrated naval weapons systems for Germany, the DoS announced on 17 April 2026.

Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) told Janes on 6 September 2024 that it and the German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) that the German Navy's future F127 air defence frigates are “foreseen to be equipped with a US Aegis system... Closing the current capability gap in countering ballistic and hypersonic threats has a very high priority for the German Navy”.

According to the DoS the estimated USD11.9 billion procurement would include: eight shipsets of MK 41 Baseline VIII Vertical Launch Systems (VLS); eight shipsets of AN/SPY-6(V)1 active electronically scanned array (AESA) S-Band radars; nine Mk 45 gun mounts; three AN/SLQ-32(V)6 Electronic Warfare systems; and eight shipsets of AN/SPQ-9B radar systems.

It would also include: eight shipsets of Aegis-based Integrated Combat System (ICS) MK 6 MOD X computing infrastructures; eight shipsets of Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) radar data sharing network; eight shipsets of Global Positioning System (GPS: a form of GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite Services)-based Positioning Navigation and Timing (PNT) Service; and eight shipsets of AN/WSN-12 Inertial Navigation Systems (INS); nine Command and Control (C2) processors; and ten Multifunctional Information Distribution Systems (MIDS) for Link 16 data exchange.
