Saab disclosed specifications for a large uncrewed underwater vehicle (LUUV) demonstrator it developed with the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) to Janes on 20 October 2026.
The project's focus has not been to achieve a particular vehicle size, but to demonstrate a relevant operational capability quickly, Saab product manager for autonomous naval systems Peter Karlström told Janes .

Saab did not disclose whether the demonstrator could support allied navies when asked.
The system is primarily being used to explore how autonomous underwater systems can support information gathering, surveillance, and underwater situational awareness. Its design also allows for future capability growth and experimentation, Karlström affirmed. Another programme objective is to investigate how autonomous underwater systems can conduct longer-duration operations while maintaining operational effectiveness, although Saab did not disclose the vehicle's endurance.
Saab's LUUV completed sea acceptance tests covering core vehicle functions, autonomous underwater operations, navigation, software, and sensor integration. The tests sought to validate Saab's Autonomous Ocean Core software, which enables the vehicle's autonomous functions. Further testing and evaluation are planned.
