Japan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) has for the first time detected a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) Jiangkai III (Type 054B)-class frigate operating beyond Beijing's first island chain, in what appears to mark the class's first recorded transit into the Western Pacific.

In a statement issued on 19 May, the MoD's Joint Staff Office said it had confirmed the movement of two PLAN vessels, a Jiangkai III-class frigate and a Fuyu-class fast combat support ship, transiting waters between Okinawa Island and Miyako Island and heading into the Pacific Ocean.

It marks the first time that the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has confirmed a Jiangkai III-class frigate during its surveillance and monitoring activities, said the MoD.

According to a map accompanying the statement, the pair of vessels was first detected on 18 May northwest of Okinawa, before proceeding southwards and then transiting southeast through the Miyako Strait on 19 May.

The strait, located between Okinawa Main Island and Miyako Island, is one of the principal maritime routes used by the PLAN to access the Western Pacific from the East China Sea.

The vessels involved were identified as the lead Type 054B frigate Luohe bearing pennant number 545, and the lead Fuyu I/II (Type 901/Type 901A)-class fast combat support ship Hulun Hu with pennant number 901.

The MoD said the vessels were monitored by JMSDF maritime patrol aircraft, specifically a P-1 aircraft from Fleet Air Wing 4 based at Atsugi and a P-3C aircraft from Fleet Air Wing 5 based at Naha.
