India has launched the first vessel under its indigenous Fleet Support Ship (FSS) programme and signed a new contract for BrahMos fire-control systems and launchers for Indian Navy warships. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced both developments on 6 October.
The first FSS, named Surya, was designed and built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). The vessels are intended to provide underway replenishment and logistical support to naval task groups operating far from their home bases.
According to the MoD, the ships will have enhanced cargo and fluid-transfer capacity, onboard maintenance facilities, the ability to operate multirole helicopters, and self-defence systems. The announcement provided no further details.
Alongside the launch, HSL held a keel-laying ceremony for the programme's fifth vessel.
At the ceremonies, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the FSS programme would strengthen the Indian Navy's operational reach, endurance, and effectiveness across the Indian Ocean Region.
Separately, the MoD announced the signing of an INR6.62 billion (USD79 million) contract to procure BrahMos fire-control systems and launchers for Indian Navy vessels.
The BrahMos weapon system already serves as the Indian Navy's principal surface-to-surface missile capability for maritime strike missions.
The newly contracted launchers and associated fire-control equipment will support the missile's integration into additional frontline naval platforms.
