Finland completes border fence, Sweden to send Gripens and corvette

On 7 September 2026, Finland's Border Guard service announced that it had completed 200 km of border fence and sensors along sections of its frontier with Russia.
The Border Guard said in a news release that day that the border installations are a long-term investment with versatile new infrastructure. As an example, it added, the technical surveillance in place can be developed and expanded cost-efficiently.
Finland shares a 1,340 km land border and a 115 km maritime border with Russia, with the latter meeting the 122 km maritime border between Estonia and Russia at a tripoint in the Baltic Sea. On 20 March Finland was allocated EUR17 million (USD19.7 million) from the EU's Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to acquire UAVs and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) resistant to the disruption of global navigation satellite services (GNSS), for use along its eastern border and in the Gulf of Finland.
On 23 April the Finnish government applied for a separate EUR35 million in BMVI funding for UAV detection and C-UAV systems for the Border Guard, also along the eastern border and Gulf of Finland.
Earlier, the Finnish Defence Forces said in a news release on 28 August 2026 that they are deepening cooperation with Sweden until at least the end of 2026 to strengthen border surveillance for Finland.
