Aircraft carrier USS Dwight D Eisenhower (CVN 69) recently finished sea trials marking completion of the ship's Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth, Virginia, the US Navy (USN) announced on 28 April.

Eisenhower entered NNSY in January 2025 – shortly after engaging Houthi forces during naval combat in the Red Sea region -- for its PIA, a scheduled period for an aircraft carrier to undergo extensive maintenance, repairs and modernisation to overhaul the carrier and ready the ship for continued operational demands.

Finishing the Eisenhower PIA on time was a priority for the yard, Rear Admiral Kavon Hakimzadeh told Janes in August 2025 shortly after taking command of NNSY. The yard had in recent years had not met expectations for meeting ship-work deadlines, Rear Adm Hakimzadeh noted.

NNSY firsts during the Eisenhower PIA included installing a main seawater valve for a waterborne carrier, as well as performing nozzle block inspections of main engine high pressure turbines to scope repair to similar components in the fleet, USN officials said in the announcement.

For the first time at any of the nation's four public shipyards, underwater carrier shafting inspections were performed to help gauge future dry dock work on the ship, the navy said.

The PIA team also performed first-time catapult trough non-destructive test inspections and structural repairs to help extend the life of the aircraft launch system, Commander Jason Downs, project superintendent, said in the statement.
