OCCAR orders more Schakal IFVs for Germany and Netherlands
OCCAR has exercised an option for the procurement of 35 more Schakal IFVs for Germany and 34 for the Netherlands. (KNDS)
The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has exercised an option for the procurement of more Schakal infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for Germany and for the Netherlands from Rheinmetall-KNDS 64:36 joint venture Artec, OCCAR and KNDS announced on 7 August 2026. OCCAR commissioned the procurement of 35 more Schakals for the Bundeswehr and 34 more for the Royal Netherlands Army (RNLA).
OCCAR ordered 150 Schakals for the Bundeswehr and 72 for the RNLA on 17 October 2025, with an option for the call-off of up to 248 more Schakals. OCCAR said exercising the option brings the number of Schakals ordered for the Netherlands to 106.
The budget committee of the Bundestag, Germany's parliament, approved funding of the German Schakals, the country's Federal Ministry of Defence announced on 15 October 2025.
The Bundestag approved the procurement of the German Schakal IFVs - a Boxer wheeled armoured vehicle equipped with the Puma IFV's turret armed with Rheinmetall's MK 30-2/ABM (airburst munition) cannon - for deliveries in 2027-31. The Dutch Ministry of Defence announced on 17 October 2025 that deliveries for the Netherlands are planned for the fourth quarter of 2028.
KNDS said in a press release announcing the procurement of additional Schakals on 7 August that the IFVs, with a dismount capacity of six soldiers, would form the backbone of the German Army's new medium forces. For the Netherlands, Schakal will equip the RNLA's 13 Light Brigade.
