NSPA awards contract to Thales for delivery of D-TACAN to Spanish Air and Space Force

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) awarded a contract to Thales in Spain to supply its Deployable Tactical Air Navigation (D-TACAN) system to the Spanish Air and Space Force (Ejército del Aire y el Espacio), according to a 31 July press release from Thales.

The contract includes a logistic support package covering spare parts, training and product information and electronic documentation.

Other NATO member states with similar operational and technical requirements will also be able to acquire additional D-TACAN systems without a tender process, Thales Defence said in a 3 August social media post.

The D-TACAN system, based on Thales' ground-based TACAN 553, enables a fully autonomous and rapidly deployable navigation capability, according to Thales. The company also states that TACAN technology met the requirements for the Aeronautical Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) capability.

The D-TACAN system is integrated into a 20-foot (around 6 metres long) ISO shelter. The system includes a power supply, power generation systems, and communications capabilities. The D-TACAN system can be transported by air, sea, rail and road.
