Denmark deploys combat battalion to join Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia

The Forsvaret (Danish Armed Forces) Defence Command announced on the Forsvaret website on 3 August 2026 that Denmark would begin deployment of a combat battalion to join the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia (MNB-LVA) in the coming days to contribute to the defence of the alliance's eastern flank. This follows the landing of a Danish infantry company at Lielvarde Air Base in Latvia on 7 July 2026.

The Defence Command said on the Forsvaret's website on 7 July that the infantry company would be present at Camp Valdemar in Latvia until the arrival of the combat battalion in early August for deployment until January 2027.

In its 3 August announcement, the command said there would be increased military activity in several locations in Denmark as tanks, infantry vehicles, armoured personnel carriers (APCs), and other equipment is transported to ports and shipped to Latvia. It added that temporary military zones would be established at several Danish ports from where the equipment is shipped.

Denmark's Home Guard is supporting the deployment to Latvia by securing the port areas where military equipment is being shipped. This support includes guarding, patrolling, access control and surveillance in the temporary military areas, and traffic control and management.
