Images of a new variant of a Chinese 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle (AFV), featuring a turret-mounted laser weapon, emerged on social media in late August.

Janes analysis indicates the vehicle is fitted with an unmanned turret featuring a 30 mm cannon and a laser counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) weapon, potentially enabling it to perform fire-support roles. The vehicle appears to be based on the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) in-service Type 19 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

It remains unclear whether the platform is operational, undergoing trials, or serving as a technology demonstrator.

Configuration

Janes analysis suggests the C-UAS laser is intended to engage line-of-sight aerial targets. Once a target is detected by the onboard electro-optical (EO) system, the weapon emits a focused beam of light to disable or destroy it. The system appears designed to engage one threat at a time with precision.

The laser can likely counter low-altitude, slow-moving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating at altitudes of 50–80 m, a range consistent with other Chinese laser weapons, such as the Guangjian (Light Arrow) series. The platform also appears to have a cooling system to prevent onboard equipment from overheating.

The vehicle also incorporates situational-awareness and targeting systems, including day/night optics, a laser rangefinder, and a roof-mounted panoramic sight. It also features box-like structures on either side of the turret that could house ammunition, sensors, armour modules, or missile systems.
