Boeing announced on 1 October it received a contract award from the US Air Force (USAF) for the first four full-rate production MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters. The USAF declared initial operating capability for the programme in August 2026.

Kathleen Jolivette, vice president and general manager of Vertical Lift Programs for Boeing Defense, Space & Security, said in a company statement that production “validates key readiness levels for Grey Wolf and supports the service's fielding plans”.

“Adding these aircraft to the production queue brings additional momentum to ongoing fielding and modernization efforts,” she said.

The fiscal year (FY) 2027 USAF Budget requested four aircraft for USD252.94 million, an increase from FY 2026's budget request for just two for USD154 million.

The USAF plans to bring the total of MH-139s in operation to 34 by FY 2027, the service said in its FY 2027 posture statement.

According to Boeing, it has delivered 27 MH-139A helicopters to date (including 20 low-rate initial production assets) and is under contract to deliver 42.
