Romania orders SPYDER SHORAD-VSHORAD systems

The Romanian Ministry of National Defence (MAPN) General Directorate for Armaments, through Romtehnica, signed the first contract of a framework agreement with Rafael on 24 June 2026 for SPYDER short-range air defence-very short range air defence (SHORAD-VSHORAD) systems.
The MAPN said in a press release on 25 June that the RON3.049 billion (USD660 million) contract covers the acquisition of an integrated SHORAD-VSHORAD anti-aircraft system, three VSHORAD anti-aircraft systems, a SHORAD system, a training and education system, and a simulation system for the verification and evaluation of VSHORAD operators. The ministry expects the first two VSHORAD systems to be delivered within three years, with training courses for the operators of the systems to be carried out before deliveries begin.
Romania's SHORAD-VSHORAD integrated weapon system acquisition programme aims to equip the Romanian Army with advanced systems designed to protect against aerial threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cruise missiles. According to the MAPN, the mobile SHORAD-VSHORAD systems will be integrated into defensive networks and will be compatible with NATO requirements.
The framework agreement concluded in July 2025 provides for the signing of three contracts for a total of six integrated SHORAD-VSHORAD anti-aircraft systems, a training and education system, a simulation system for the verification and evaluation of VSHORAD operators, six SHORAD systems and six VSHORAD systems, including ammunition, training and logistical support worth a total of RON10.33 billion.
