Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched the seventh Taigei-class submarine on order for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
The vessel, which will enter service as JS Shogei once commissioned, took to the water on 8 October at MHI's Kobe Shipyard, according to a 9 October announcement on an official JMSDF social media account.
The Taigei class is progressively replacing the JMSDF's Sōryū-class submarines.
First-of-class vessel JSTaigei was commissioned in March 2022, while the yet-to-be commissioned sixth-of-class Sogei was launched in October 2025.
Japan is anticipating a class of eight Taigei-class boats.
The Taigei class has a standard displacement of about 3,000 tonnes, an overall length of 84 m, and a beam of 9.1 m, with accommodation for around 70 personnel.
It also features improved sonar performance and measures to reduce radiated noise compared with preceding submarine classes.
The class is armed with six 533 mm bow tubes capable of deploying the Type 89 wire‑guided torpedo, and all boats are expected to eventually deploy the newer Type 18 heavyweight weapon.
The submarine can also launch UGM‑84L Harpoon anti‑ship missiles.
Following its launch, Shogei will undergo outfitting work, including the installation and integration of hull systems, machinery, electrical equipment, and weapons.
The submarine is scheduled for delivery in 2027.
