South Korea seeks AIM-120C-8 procurement

The US State Department has approved a possible sale of AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) in response to a request from South Korea.
The proposed USD292 million sale covers 70 AIM-120C-8 missiles and two AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM guidance sections, in addition to non-major defence equipment such as consumables, spares, documentation and engineering support, the State Department said on 10 June.
The deal, under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) mechanism, remains subject to congressional review.
An export-only missile, the AIM-120C-8 is externally similar to the AIM-120D and has an estimated operational range of over 160 km, according to Janes assessments.
The C-8 is also a ‘Form, Fit and Function Refresh' (F3R) variant, incorporating upgrades to the missile's guidance section through new processors and redesigned circuit cards.
“The proposed sale will improve the Republic of Korea's capability to meet current and future threats by expanding its air defence capability, deterring aggression in the region, and ensuring interoperability with US Forces,” the State Department said.
RTX Corporation in Arlington, Virginia, is the principal contractor.
