The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) has emerged as a confirmed operator of the IAI/ELTA ELL-8212 airborne self-protection electronic countermeasures (ECM) jamming pod after an official photograph showed an F-16D Block 52+ Fighting Falcon aircraft equipped with the system.

The photograph, released by the Singapore Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on 14 June, shows the system installed on the aircraft's port outboard underwing station (station 2). According to MINDEF, the F-16D was participating in Exercise ‘Red Flag-Alaska' at the time.

Held at Eielson Air Force Base from 28 May to 12 June, Exercise ‘Red Flag-Alaska' involved 10 RSAF F-16 and eight Boeing F-15SG fighter aircraft with more than 250 personnel from Singapore's Peace Carvin II and Peace Carvin V detachments in the US, MINDEF said.

The ELL-8212 is designed to enhance the carrier aircraft's survivability against adversarial fighters and other military aircraft. ELTA describes the pod as providing protection against air-to-air and surface-to-air threats in “dense radar-guided weapons system environments”.

The 100 kg, low-drag pod is designed to resemble an air-to-air missile and can be carried on outboard wing stations. According to ELTA, it is capable of operating across the aircraft's flight envelope, including under high g-loads and at high speed.

The company said the system incorporates autonomous threat-handling capabilities. An integrated ESM receiver enables threat interception, analysis, identification, sorting, and initiation of automatic selection of jamming techniques. Other features include high radio frequency (RF) sensitivity and high effective radiated power (ERP).

The pod can also record mission events for post-flight analysis using computer-based mission replay systems.
