Netherlands to acquire GlobalEye AEW&C aircraft
The Netherlands is to acquire a single GlobalEye aircraft to add to those it is funding for NATO. (Saab)
The Netherlands is to acquire a Saab GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, signing a letter of intent with the Swedish manufacturer that was announced on 10 September.
The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that a single aircraft will be acquired for national use, to be delivered in 2031. It added that it will be operated and supported as a joint fleet with the three aircraft being acquired by Sweden under the terms of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) announced by the two countries on the same day.
“This gives Dutch and Swedish crews access to the available aircraft,” the Dutch MoD said. The Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force will gain access to the three Swedish Air Force aircraft from 2028.
Further to this one national aircraft, the Netherlands is part-funding the acquisition of up to 10 GlobalEyes for the NATO Airborne Early Warning Force (NAEWF) replacement of the Boeing E-3A Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS). As well as acquiring the GlobalEye as an operator, the Netherlands will also work with Sweden to further develop the capabilities of the platform, the MoD said.
Saab said that no order had yet been received, and disclosed no details on an expected contract value.
