Indonesian Air Force tests WAFAR RD-702 rocket

The Indonesian Air Force has tested the domestically produced 70 mm Wrap Around Fin Aerial Rocket (WAFAR) RD-702 rocket at a firing range.
Developed by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), the 70 mm WAFAR RD-702 rocket was launched at the Nanggala shooting range in East Java on 18 June, the air force said on 29 June. The service added that personnel from its Research and Development Directorate conducted the test.
According to the air force, the trial supported the national rocket certification and development process. The demonstration assessed the rocket's performance, including “aspects of launch reliability, flight characteristics, and overall system effectiveness”, the service said.
The air force added that the results will be evaluated to support the weapon's next stage of development.
The WAFAR RD-702 is intended for integration with helicopters and fighter aircraft, according to PTDI. Neither the company nor the air force has disclosed system specifications such as range, warhead, or guidance system.
The tests will likely support PTDI's export efforts. In April 2026, the company said it was offering operationalised 70mm folding fin aerial rocket (FFAR) variants to regional countries, including Malaysia, for integration on the Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF's) CN-235-220 aircraft manufactured by PTDI.
PTDI said it began manufacturing 70 mm rockets under licence from Belgium's Forges de Zeebrugge (FZ) in the 1980s. Through this collaboration, the company said it acquired FFAR production technology and has since produced 70 mm FFAR rockets in the Mk 40 and Mk 4 variants.
