Indonesia's military has publicly demonstrated the firing of its RM-70 Vampire multiple rocket launcher (MRL) during Exercise ‘Super Garuda Shield' 2026, held across multiple locations from 31 August to 11 September. The firing confirms the system's deployment by the Southeast Asian country.
Footage published on the US Department of Defense's (DoD's) Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) by the US Army's 4th Infantry Division in early September showed the Indonesian Marine Corps operating a Vampire mounted on an 8x8 Tatra truck chassis. The exercise also featured live firings by the Indonesian Army's Astros II Mk6 MRL and the US Army's M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
The demonstration followed an agreement that Czech company Excalibur Army signed with Indonesian firm PT Republik Defensindo (PT RDI) in February 2021 to jointly produce the Vampire for the Indonesian military. At the time, Excalibur Army said the agreement covered MRLs mounted on 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 Tatra truck chassis as well as technology transfer arrangements.
It added that the Vampire, which is an upgraded version of the RM-70, would be produced in the Indonesian city of Batam, with deliveries to the Indonesian military of locally manufactured systems beginning in 2021. Excalibur Army did not disclose the number of systems covered by the contract, its value, or the delivery schedule.
According to the company, the first batch of Vampires produced in the Czech Republic was delivered to Indonesia in 2016.
