The Indonesian Army has conducted the first publicly disclosed live firing of its new Türkiye-supplied Indonesia Tactical Ballistic Missile (ITBM) launcher.
However, the firing involved TRG-122 guided rockets rather than the Khan ballistic missile for which the system was acquired.
The firing was conducted by the Indonesian Army's 22nd Field Artillery Battalion in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, on 20 October, according to footage released by the service's Field Artillery Weapons Centre on 22 October.
According to the centre, the activity was conducted to test the operational readiness of the ITBM system and improve the proficiency of personnel assigned to operate it.
The firing sequence began with what the army described as a “pilot shoot”, followed by the launch of three TRG-122 rockets.
Indonesia announced that it had selected the Khan ballistic missile system during the Indo Defence 2022 exhibition in Jakarta.
The system uses a Roketsan-developed multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL), which Indonesia has since designated as the ITBM.
The Khan is the export version of Roketsan's Bora tactical ballistic missile, which has a stated range of 80–280 km and a diameter of 610 mm.
Roketsan states that the MBRL can employ 122, 230, 300 and 610 mm munitions. The company lists the TRG-122, TRLG-122, TRG-230, TRLG-230 and TRG-300, as well as the Khan missile, among the weapons that can be fired from the system.
Roketsan gives the MBRL an engagement-range span of 10–280 km across its compatible munitions.
