GDMS makes IMPACT on airspace control and aviation mission planning

General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has integrated the US Army's Tactical Airspace Integration System (TAIS) and the Aviation Mission Planning System (AMPS) into a single solution called the Integrated Mission Planning and Airspace Control Tools (IMPACT) and showcased it at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) 2022 annual convention in Washington, DC, held from 10 to 12 October.

TAIS, which is a Program of Record (POR) produced by GDMS, is a web browser-based application that enables 3D visualisation to plan airspace usage and conduct conflict detection and resolution on the fly. AMPS, which is also a POR, provides the necessary tools for army aviation aircrew to plan routes and aircraft loads.

The objective of IMPACT “is to take all the tools and make them play nicely together” to achieve a synergy of functions, a GDMS representative told Janes. The result is a single, role-based, hardware-agnostic software solution that combines both systems' capabilities.

IMPACT enables mission planning to take place using the real-time airspace environment and gives planners better access to the wider tactical situation through the shared common operational picture (COP) available in TAIS.
