Fincantieri has signed an eighth contract amendment with the Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (OCCAR) for extra equipment for Italy's U212 Near Future Submarine (NFS) program, the company said in a press release on 23 June 2026.

Worth EUR317 million (USD361 million), the amendment will see Fincantieri subsidiary WASS integrate unspecified torpedo countermeasure systems on the four U212 NFS submarines. Also to be integrated by Fincantieri are rescue interfaces, the Italian Navy's new Submarine Assistance, Ventilation & Rescue (SAVER) system, and remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) assisted intervention procedures.

The amendment will allow the delivery of the programme's fourth submarine to be brought forward by two years, from 2034 to 2032. This will mean the Italian Navy is scheduled to get one new submarine per year starting in 2029, Fincantieri said. It includes logistics support for long-term operational availability of the boats.

The company said that compared to the previous U212A-class submarines, the U212 NFS boats have a more mature design, and more domestic Italian content such as lithium-ion propulsion batteries and a new Italian combat management system.
