Spanish company Armmo presented its heavily armed ARW39CAT-A unmanned surface vehicle (USV) at the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition, held in Paris from 15-19 June.

The ARW39CAT-A is built using a composite catamaran hull 12 m in length, with a 3.8 m beam. It can operate at speeds up to 45-50 kt, with a combat radius of 540 n miles. It is designed to carry a variety of payloads, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in counter-UAV (C-UAV) interception, first person view (FPV) strike or reconnaissance, or bomber roles.

Others include remote weapons stations (RWSs), surface-to-air missiles, electronic warfare, surveillance, and missions systems. Its maximum payload is 800-1,200 kg, depending on confuguration, and the USV is powered by a pair of Volvo Penta 480 hp engines, according to Armmo.

For Eurosatory 2026, Armmo displayed the USV with a complete set of weapon systems and sensors. These included the company's Bandit-X interceptor UAVs. Up to 20 can be stored and launched from a compartment at the front of the hull, and these can be replaced by other types of FPV strike UAVs; a Unirobotics Trakon 30 mm RWS; an Armmo Gull bomber UAV; an Armmo acoustic beacon sensor; and a pair of mock AIM-9 Sidewinder anti-air missiles .

Javier Roblera Pascual, head of production at Armmo, told Janes that one of the use cases for the ARW39CAT-A was manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) with larger surface combatants, such as frigates. With up to five partly autonomous USVs controlled by a single warship, the concept of operations involves the ARW39CAT-As acting as a reconnaissance and forward short-range air defence (SHORAD) platforms.
