Cambodia receives initial batch of Chinese T-59D tanks

Cambodia has received an initial batch of T‑59D main battle tanks (MBTs) from China, according to local media reports and social media footage that appears to show the tanks in country.

Cambodian media, including The Phnom Penh Post, confirmed the delivery, reporting on 11 June that the tanks were ordered before the 2025 conflict with Thailand.

In Thailand, state-owned media reported, citing the Thai Ministry of Defence (MoD) that 39 T‑59D MBTs, out of a total order of 93 units, had been delivered. The report added that the tanks are refurbished versions of the legacy platform. Separately, reports in Cambodia said the order will eventually total more than 100 T-59D tanks.

Social media footage has also appeared to show T‑59D MBTs being transported from China to Cambodia, although Janes has not independently verified this.

The Royal Cambodian Army has not commented on the procurement, and spokesperson were not contactable.

The delivered T-59Ds reportedly feature upgrades including a 105  mm main gun replacing the original 100 mm system, alongside improved night‑vision and thermal imaging sights, and enhancements to protection and onboard systems.

The baseline T-59 MBT design is derived from the Soviet T-55, a first-generation MBT developed in the 1940s. The T-59D variant incorporates upgrades to firepower, protection, and fire-control systems intended to extend the platform's service life.

Thailand and Cambodia were involved in a brief border conflict in July 2025.
