Avio USA has broken ground on its first US solid rocket motor (SRM) manufacturing facility in Hurt, Virginia, the company said in a 29 September statement. The approximately 900,000 sq ft (83,613 m 2 ) facility is intended to expand US SRM production to meet increased demand, according to the statement.
Avio USA finalised a contract for around 1,300 acres (526 hectares) of land for the facility in April 2026, James Syring, CEO for Avio USA, told Janes on 2 October. The company has been working on the factory's design this year, with the detailed design scheduled to be completed in mid-October, he said.
“We've already released a pre-construction contract to start work to HITT Contracting. We did that in the month of September. Then you'll see us with full construction package awards through HITT starting in December,” Syring said.
“All of the needed process equipment is on order. There's been some long lead items like the mixers, as you can imagine, [that] have been ordered and support our timeline for construction,” he said.
“Everything that we've done has been leading up to the start of full-scale construction by the end of this year. We're on track to finish the factory by the end of 2028 and produce rocket motors in 2029,” Syring said, adding that “we're signing agreements now that will have us starting delivery in 2029”.
