Singapore deploys Sea Giraffe 1X radars on fixed installations

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has installed the Saab Giraffe 1X multi-mission radar on fixed installations, marking a notable variation from earlier disclosures on how the system would be fielded.

Satellite imagery reviewed by Janes confirms that antenna associated with the Giraffe 1X radar has been incorporated onto a tower within Changi Naval Base.

Janes can also visually confirm the presence of another Giraffe 1X radar setup on Pulau Satumu, the southernmost islet in Singapore's territorial waters where the Raffles Lighthouse is located.

The islet is situated at Singapore's southern approaches, near key maritime routes into and out of the Singapore Strait.

It is likely that these radars are the naval Sea Giraffe 1X variant which will provide 3-dimensional surveillance of both aerial and surface targets.

These installations are notable because earlier disclosures by the SAF did not indicate that the Giraffe 1X would be deployed on fixed installations.

At Singapore Airshow 2026, the Chief of the Republic of Singapore Air Force, Major General Kelvin Fan Sui Siong, disclosed that Singapore was acquiring the Giraffe 1X to replace the service's Portable Search and Target Acquisition Radar, or PSTAR.

He said the radar would enhance Singapore's ability to detect a wider range of aerial threats, including small drones, and provide short-range surveillance in support of army operations.

In the same disclosure, Maj Gen Fan said Singapore would also acquire the URO Vehículo de Alta Movilidad Táctico Vehicle (VAMTAC) to mount either the RBS 70 or Giraffe 1X.
