Royal Thai Air Force to procure Indra's long-range radar

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) is procuring a long-range air surveillance radar from Spanish company Indra for deployment at Phuket Air Base in south-western Thailand.

Indra said on 24 September that it will supply a Lanza 3D Long Range Radar (LRR) to the RTAF to enhance surveillance and airspace control over waters connecting the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca.

Lanza LRR is an L-band radar, with an operating frequency of 1–2 GHz, capable of detecting a range of threats, including small, slow-moving unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), stealth aircraft, projectiles and different types of missiles, Indra added.

The radar is designed to operate in challenging environmental conditions, including high humidity, and can maintain performance in contested electromagnetic environments, Indra said.

According to company specifications, Lanza LRR has a maximum instrumented range of 470 km, and can detect targets at altitudes of up to 30,480 m. The radar provides 360° azimuth coverage, scans every 10–12 seconds, and provides elevation coverage of 20°.

Indra said it will also supply its AirDef command and control (C2) system to support operation of the Lanza LRR at Phuket Air Base. According to Janes C4ISR & Mission Systems: Air, AirDef comprises a suite of products designed to support all levels of air C2, from mission planning to execution of offensive, defensive, and air support operations. The system integrates data from multiple intelligence and surveillance sources to generate a common operational air picture.
