Elbit Systems UK artillery simulators in use by British Army

Elbit Systems UK (ESUK) has completed fielding Interim Indirect Fires Simulation (IIDFS) artillery and mortar simulators for the British Army, and a number of training courses have been successfully conducted.

Speaking to Janes at Clarion Defence's 2026 International Training Technology Exhibition and Conference (ITEC 26) held in London in April, Martin Fausset, CEO of ESUK, said that 12 105 mm light gun and 12 81 mm mortar simulators had been delivered. Six of the light guns are at the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill with a further six at the Collective Training Group (CTG) at Warminster. Six mortars are at the Combined Arms Manoeuvre School at Warminster, with a further six at CTG. The simulators held by the CTG can be deployed to support unit training.

Fausset said the systems had delivered double the anticipated training hours within the first three months of their use. “The Royal Artillery has run a number of courses using the Light Gun simulator” he said, “and they've now completed a course where they didn't fire a real round but still qualified”. He added that one of the courses was for the new King's Gurkha Artillery.

The simulators are gradually being integrated with other systems to support live training, Fausset said, citing as an example the new ESUK-supplied Ground Based Surveillance Radar (GBSR) which can be used for fall of shot correction.
