US radar company Echodyne is seeing increasing demand for short and medium range radars for use in the counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (C-UAV) role, as UAVs become a preoccupation for militaries, company representatives told Janes at the Eurosatory 2026 defence exhibition held in Paris from 15-19 June.

The company is supplying to hundreds of customers globally, including for integration into a growing number of C-UAV systems for detection, discrimination, and cueing of effectors such as remote weapon stations (RWSs) and lasers, said Eben Frankenberg, Echodyne CEO.

“There's the detection, tracking side of it. So making the initial detection and then tracking it, classifying it as a drone versus other things like birds etc. We do a lot of that. Then there's the mitigation [countermeasures] side. Sometimes you use the same radars for both, where the radars that are doing the initial detection, tracking, queuing [on of weapons], whatever that is, sending a missile to a particular location, or an interceptor drone, microwave, or laser or whatever.”

He went on, “there are other situations where we just work with the mitigator. So we might take a cue from some other battlefield-wide system for our radar to pick up that threat and start tracking it, and sending the cue data over to your weapon system.”

He added, “some weapon people will say, can we have four radars on the platform. That's all I need and I'll just spin my turret to your queue and whichever radar of the four is tracking it, that's where I'll get my data. Other people say, no, I want a dedicated radar on my turret.”
