Denmark procures Rheinmetall MASS decoy launchers

The Danish Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has contracted Rheinmetall to supply five of its Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) decoy launchers for the Royal Danish Navy (RDN). The contract was signed on 18 June 2026, but was published by DALO in August.
The MASS launchers will be integrated onto RDN Absalon- and Iver-Huitfeldt-class frigates and the RDN's weapons school. The contract includes an up to 20-year framework agreement for operation, maintenance and supply, said Rheinmetall and the Danish Armed Forces in a 14 August press release.
Negotiated without a prior call for competition, the estimated value of the new system and the framework agreement for maintenance and resupply of ammunition is DKK745 million (USD115 million), with a maximum value of nearly DKK1.3 billion, said DALO in a tender notice on 6 August.
After a market survey DALO said that Rheinmetall should be chosen because it is the only supplier that can support, maintain, and supply ammunition for the system throughout its lifetime. Also because of the capability that Rheinmetall's ammunition gives the launcher, DALO added.
The Danish Armed Forces ordered an unstated quantity of Rheinmetall's Omnitrap-ER (extended range) decoys. Rheinmetall says Omnitrap-ER is intended specifically against modern imaging-radar and infrared-guided threats, with extra range and improved trajectory combining with the trainable launcher for more control over where a false target is generated relative to the ship.
MASS has multispectral decoys using a single system, covering all relevant wavelength ranges, including radar, ultraviolet, electro-optical sensors, lasers and infrared, said Hauke H. Bindzus, CEO of Rheinmetall's Business Unit Protection Systems.
