Viasat wins USD307 million award to provide multi-orbit connectivity to USMC

Viasat Inc announced on 23 September it won the Marine Enterprise Commercial Satcom Satellite Services (MECS2) contract from the US Space Force's (USSF) Commercial Satellite Communications Office (CSCO). The contract stipulates Viasat will provide global satellite services to the US Marine Corps (USMC) across L-, Ku, and Ka-bands, according to a company statement.
Viasat received an initial USD42 million task order award under a seven-year USD307 million ceiling indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract. A company spokesperson told Janes on 28 September “there is no set timeframe for how capabilities will be provided during that period beyond supporting the USMC with current mission requirements, as well as providing flexibility and scalability to support needs as mission requirements evolve”.
Viasat said it will “provide secure data custody from the edge back to the Marine Corps Enterprise Network” via its network, which will also include “Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations Center (SOC) support”, providing the USMC with “bandwidth management, terminal inventory management, network performance monitoring and cybersecurity services”.
A company spokesperson told Janes that access to Viasat's global Ka-band network alongside its ViaSat-3 satellites specifically would provide the USMC with the ability “to focus bandwidth where it's needed for multi-domain operations” while adding more capacity to “address growing bandwidth demands” modern missions require.
Viasat will also provide “integrated network technologies and platform capabilities that can enable a decision-advantage in the modern battlespace,” the company's spokesperson told Janes.
“This includes network integration software and hardware solutions designed to support a seamless experience through intelligent network orchestration and help operators to access, share, and act on mission-critical data,” they explained.
