Tokyo-based Terra Drone Corporation has increased its investments in Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) enterprises and showcased the long-range threat response capabilities of its interceptor UAV.

On 28 April, Terra Drone announced its investment in Ukrainian defence technology company Winnylab, which specialises in the design and production of fixed-wing interceptor UAVs.

The investment, channelled through its industrial arm Terra Inspectioneering, aims to add long-range and long-endurance fixed-wing interception capabilities to Terra Drone's short‑range rapid‑response systems, supporting the development of its layered defence architecture, the company said.

Terra Drone's investment in Winnylab follows an earlier investment in Ukrainian rocket‑type interceptor UAV developer Amazing Drones in March. Amazing Drones develops low-cost interceptor UAVs designed for rapid deployment in Ukraine's combat environment affected by electronic warfare and jamming, Terra Drone said.

Layered defence

The investments in Winnylab and Amazing Drones form part of Terra Drone's broader efforts to establish a two‑tier forward-line and terminal defence structure capable of intercepting both immediate and wide‑area threats, the Japanese firm said.

According to Terra Drone, Winnylab has developed Terra A2, an electric fixed‑wing interceptor UAV capable of wide‑area interception and long‑endurance patrol including in communication/GPS-denied environments.

The Terra A2 has a maximum speed of 312 km/h, flight endurance of more than 40 minutes, and range of up to 75 km, Terra Drone said, adding that the aircraft's top speed exceeds the typical 200 km/h top-range speed of Shahed‑type UAVs. The company also said that Terra A2 achieves longer flight endurance through “the integrated optimisation of battery capacity, propulsion efficiency, wing design, and drag reduction”.
