Finnish synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite company Iceye is expanding its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. The company is establishing manufacturing facilities, deepening partnerships, and embedding itself in local defence industries amid rising demand for sovereign intelligence capabilities.

In an interview with Janes at Iceye's new office in New Delhi in September, CEO Rafal Modrzewski described the company as a “global provider of sovereign intelligence systems” delivering hardware, software, and operational space capabilities tailored to national requirements.

According to Modrzewski, Iceye offers satellites, ground infrastructure, and software tools, allowing customers to configure systems according to their own needs. This enables countries to own and operate their satellites independently, ensuring sovereignty over intelligence collection, he said.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, which uses radar pulses to generate high-resolution images of the Earth's surface, remains at the core of Iceye's satellite imaging capabilities.

Unlike an optical camera, SAR can collect imagery through cloud cover and at night, Modrzewski said. Although radar images look different from optical images, users can interpret them to identify objects and draw conclusions, he added.

“SAR is relatively new. In the past, you would use more optical data. Why this trend is changing is because today you can get high-quality, high-resolution SAR imagery for relatively low cost,” Modrzewski said.

SAR enables persistent and reliable monitoring of maritime and land areas, allowing users to identify changes such as the appearance of a vessel or vehicle, he added.

Modrzewski said demand for Iceye's products spans multiple military missions. In defence, SAR intelligence supports surveillance, target tracking, change detection, targeting, and situational awareness.
