Singapore has begun early discussions on possible involvement in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), Janes has been informed by a source close to the matter.

However, Janes understands that the talks are presently at an exploratory stage, and no decisions have been made by the Singapore government to become a participant in the programme,

The development nevertheless marks the first known indication that Singapore is formally examining potential links to the programme, which is being developed jointly by the UK, Japan, and Italy to deliver a next-generation combat air capability from 2035.

The GCAP programme brings together government and industry partners from the three countries, and it is regarded as one of the world's two leading sixth-generation combat aircraft initiatives alongside the US's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) project.

Technical details of the airframe that will be produced are scant, but concept models unveiled by GCAP partners thus far at major air shows indicate a design with canted twin tails, a broad blended wing-body layout, and a twin-engine arrangement.

Beyond the development of a crewed aircraft, GCAP is intended to deliver a broader air combat ecosystem incorporating advanced sensors, artificial intelligence-enabled technologies, and the ability to operate alongside autonomous and uncrewed systems.

These early talks are consistent with Singapore's longstanding approach towards major defence acquisitions.

Rather than committing early to a programme, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has historically spent years evaluating technologies, industrial opportunities, and long-term strategic implications before making procurement decisions.

That approach was evident in Singapore's path towards acquiring the Lockheed Martin F-35.
