Royal Australian Air Force platforms achieve IOC

The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) has announced that the Royal Australian Air Force's (RAAF's) Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton and L3Harris MC-55A Peregrine aircraft have reached initial operational capability (IOC).

Both platforms achieved IOC “following extensive operational testing and evaluation”, the DoD said on 22 September.

The DoD also noted the completion of the RAAF's planned 14-strong Boeing P-8A Poseidon fleet, including two upgraded aircraft featuring Increment 3 Block 2 enhancements, strengthening the Australian Defence Force's (ADF's) maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) capabilities.

According to the DoD, these “milestones represent a significant strengthening of the Australian Defence Force's ability to monitor activity... across Australia's region and respond to emerging threats”.

Triton

The RAAF operates its Triton fleet in No 9 Squadron as a long-range surveillance capability from RAAF Bases Tindal and Edinburgh.

With the MQ-4C Triton now at IOC, the RAAF “has strengthened its ability to deliver persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance & targeting (ISR&T) effects across Australia's primary area of military interest”, the DoD said.

Interoperable with the P-8A, the MQ-4C is designed to provide persistent ISR and theatre-level coverage of Australia's vast exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and sea lanes, Northrop Grumman said in August.

Earlier in August, Northrop Grumman and Boeing demonstrated the Triton's ability to achieve automated manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) with a Poseidon to improve maritime ISR and targeting and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) operations.

During the lab-based demonstration, the Triton and Poseidon exchanged intelligence through a “standardised interface that enables machine-to-machine mission planning and execution across platforms”, Northrop Grumman said.
