Tokyo-based Terra Drone Corporation has established a new company in Estonia to support the expansion of its European defence business.
Terra Drone announced on 15 June that the new entity, Terra Defense Europe, will manage sales and logistics for its European operations and co-ordinate with local partners on unmanned aircraft and related systems.
The expansion follows Japan's easing of defence export rules in April, which removed long-standing restrictions on the overseas transfer of lethal defence equipment. The changes are intended to strengthen Japan's defence industrial base and enable closer integration with allied supply chains.
European expansion
According to Terra Drone, Terra Defense Europe aims to strengthen business development, supply, maintenance, and operational support capabilities in Europe for defence unmanned systems. These include the company's Terra A1, Terra A2, and Terra C1 interceptor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are being developed in collaboration with Ukrainian companies.
Terra Drone also said it will consolidate Ukrainian UAV companies Amazing Drones and Winnylab LLC as subsidiaries by acquiring 50% of the companies' shares through Terra Defense Europe, becoming their largest shareholder.
Terra Drone said the move will support its defence expansion by leveraging the companies' local capabilities and established business base.
“Going forward, Terra Drone will reinforce its group-wide collaboration framework by combining its global network with the development capabilities and business foundation that Amazing Drones [and Winnylab have] built locally, with the aim of creating medium- to long-term growth opportunities in the defence sector,” the company added.
