The Edgewing industrial consortium responsible for delivering the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) on behalf of the national partners of Italy, Japan and the UK has opened a new engineering facility in the northern Italian city of Turin.
Formally opened during a ceremony on 9 October 2026, the facility is the programme's first outside of the UK following the earlier opening of the Edgewing industrial and GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO) governmental headquarters (HQ) in Reading, UK, in 2025. The GIGO includes the GCAP Agency.
“Today, international aerospace company Edgewing opened an important new facility in Turin, Italy. The site will sustain thousands of highly skilled engineering jobs in the region, with its workforce and supply chain contributing to the development of the next-generation combat aircraft for Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom under the GCAP,” the Edgewing consortium of BAE Systems, Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co Ltd (JAIEC), and Leonardo announced.
As noted in the announcement, the new engineering facility in Turin will be joined in the coming months by others at as yet undisclosed locations in Japan and the UK. All three Edgewing global sites will play the same roles as engineering hubs contributing to the delivery of the programme, with each accommodating engineers from all three countries.
