Special Report: Middle East lessons shape Terra Drone expansion

Japanese company Terra Drone is expanding into the United Arab Emirates (UAE), targeting the country's growing counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) market with interceptor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige told Janes on 9 July that operational lessons from the conflicts in the Middle East have shaped the company's product roadmap.
According to Tokushige, an important lesson from recent Middle East conflicts is that relying exclusively on expensive interceptor missiles is not a sustainable approach to countering large-scale attacks by low-cost UASs.
Long-range one-way attack UAVs, including Shahed-type platforms, can be produced and deployed in large numbers at low cost to strike critical infrastructure and military targets, placing a significant cost burden on conventional air-defence systems, he said.
A second key lesson is the pace at which UAV threats evolve. Developments in areas such as flight speed, range, operating altitude, communications methods, resistance to GPS jamming, and attack tactics can evolve rapidly, Tokushige said.
“The interceptor side must also continuously improve its airframes and software not over several years, but in cycles of only a few months,” he added.
Based on these lessons, Tokushige said Terra Drone is prioritising cost reduction and the ability to manufacture products at scale. The company is focusing on artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled autonomy, resilience in contested electronic-warfare (EW) environments, integration with existing C-UAS architectures, and export-ready solutions for customers.
IGG partnership
Terra Drone, through its group company Terra Inspectioneering, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 7 July with UAE-based International Golden Group (IGG), a subsidiary of EDGE Group.
