Thales UK invests in directed energy potential

Thales UK is investigating the potential uses of directed energy to destroy sensors on various platforms, the company has told Jane’s .

Speaking to Jane’s at the division’s headquarters in Belfast, Thales air operations and weapon systems UK general manager Philip McBride said the company has a number of research and technology programmes in the area. ‘Sensor defeat’ has long been a focus for the company’s directed energy research, he said, with Thales conducting a demonstration in 2008 to show how several sensors on an individual platform could be defeated in quick succession.

“If you imagine a UAV coming in, it needs to see you so that it can drop its payload, or an aircraft needs to be able to see you before it can launch its weapon,” McBride said.
