South Africa announces defence science and engineering programme

10 July 2018

South Africa’s Armscor procurement agency has launched an initiative to generate more science and engineering know-how in the country off the back of its military procurements.

A tender process for a service provider to oversee the Defence Engineering and Science University Programme (DESUP) closed on 6 July, South African news outlet defenceWeb claimed. The programme targets an increase in education in science and engineering by funding local students, which will ultimately lead to job creation in the sector.

This comes as the country’s Defence Industry Fund (DIF), announced in May, was stood up on 5 July.

The fund is being delivered by Crede Capital Partners, which was appointed by Armscor and the Association of Aerospace, Maritime and Defence to act as an independent owner and operator in line with South Africa’s Financial Sector Conduct Authority requirements.
